This recipe makes a white cob-type loaf of bread. It was fun to make in the slow cooker with the kids as we don't have a bread maker.

I too was impressed how well this turned out and would never have thought of breadmaking in my slow cooker.I stuck faithfully to the recipe as I always do first time and was pleased with both the taste and texture of the bread. To be really picky there was a tiny bit too much of a sweet taste for me so next time I will reduce the sugar. Also as different slow cookers use different wattages the time may vary. Mine took 2 hours not 1 and a half and I judged this by pressing lightly on the top of the loaf as you cannot see when the bottom is brown. Grilling after cooking gave a lovely thin and crispy crust. Made great toast too and freezes well if sliced thickly.Might try this next time with wholemeal or granary flour and am wondering if it would work well with an enriched dough such as brioche.Thank you for posting this novel recipe.-16 Feb 2018

How to Make Crock Pot Bread in the Slow Cooker

Homemade bread is all the rage right now, but skillets and Dutch ovens aren’t the only creative bread baking tools around—Crock Pot bread is great for fans of soft loaves, and it lets you skip the second rise of any bread recipe you use.

Slow cookers are amazingly simple appliances that create moist roasts, soups, stews, and much more. Since its ceramic crock can hold an even temperature, it’s also a great vessel for baking. You can bake cobblers, cake, and even bread in your slow cooker.

Now, if you are a fan of brown, crusty loaves, then this bread baking method may not be for you. Breads baked in a slow cooker will not get a crusty top layer, but the bottom and sides to get nice and golden. If you love bread with a soft crust, then pull out your slow cooker and get baking.

Note: Any recipe will work for this method. You can use a no-knead, sourdough, artisan, white, or wheat bread recipe—it doesn’t matter which one.

What Is Keto Bread?

Keto bread is simply bread made with keto friendly ingredients — in this case, almond flour and coconut flour. Low carb breads are notorious for being dense or crumbly, but not this one, thanks to a special technique I’m sharing below.

Can you eat bread on keto?

Traditional breads made with wheat or other grains are not keto friendly, but you can still eat bread on keto by making your own or buying one that uses low carb ingredients.

TIP: For those looking for a shortcut, I’ve created a keto bread mix. It can also be used as a base to make keto yeast bread.

If you’re looking for how to make keto bread at home yourself, this recipe is your answer. And other than my bread mix mentioned above, this is definitely the best keto bread recipe I’ve ever had.

Why you’ll love this keto friendly bread recipe:

  • Sturdy enough to be a keto sandwich bread
  • Light and fluffy, with a delicate crumb and air pockets
  • Just a little chewiness, like real bread
  • Toasts well (but might take a bit longer)
  • Not eggy (since there are no yolks)
  • Neutral flavor
  • Not too heavy – only 82 calories per slice
  • 1 net carb per slice
  • Just 10 minutes active prep time (it’s a super easy keto bread!)

The combination of taste and nutrition makes it the best keto bread in my book.

Making Bread in a Slow Cooker – Basic Soft White Loaf

This simple slow cooker basic soft white loaf recipe. Uses barley malt extract, which results in a soft bread with a soft chewy crust and a lovely flavour.

I’ve now made a number of different types of bread in the slow cooker! For more slow cooker bread UK recipes, see my list of posts, included below.

Slow Cooker Basic Soft White Loaf – UK Recipe

After making two batches of Slow Cooker Honey Granola Recipe (BBC GoodFood) Recipe. I had just a little bit of malted barley extract left over, and as it said on the label it can be used in bread-making. I thought I’d give it try. So I came up with this slow cooker bread recipe. The result was a very easy to knead dough. Which yielded a soft white bread. With a soft and slightly chewy crust, not a crusty bread. The malt extract also added a good flavour to the final loaf.

Other bread recipes I’d seen online using barley malt extract usually used granary or malted grain bread flour. But as I didn’t have these to hand, I just used strong white bread flour and it worked.

Ingredients (Makes a 400 g loaf)
  • 350 g strong white bread flour.
  • 20 g margarine or butter.
  • 1 tsp fast-action yeast.
  • 1 ½ tsp soft brown sugar.
  • 4 tsp barley malt extract, see recipe notes below.
  • 1 tsp fine sea salt.
  • 240 ml lukewarm water.
  • Vegetable oil for oiling the pot etc.

This simple basic soft white loaf slow cooker recipe uses barley malt extract to make a soft bread with a chewy crust

Method
  1. In a large bowl rub in the marg or butter into the flour.
  2. Add the rest of the ingredients. And mix to make a sticky dough.
  3. Turn out onto a lightly floured surface. And knead for 10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Use additional flour sparingly, if it is too sticky. Shape into a smooth rounded ball, place in an oiled bowl, cover with oiled cling film.
  4. Leave to prove for an hour, until doubled in size.
  5. Gently knock back air in the dough. Lightly grease the slow cooker pot with oil. Place the dough in to the pot, and gently push out the dough. To form an oval loaf with a level flat top.
  6. Cover with the lid and leave to rise for half an hour.
  7. Put the pot into the slow cooker base unit. Place a sheet of kitchen paper over the top of the pot, (to absorb any excess steam that collects on the lid) held in place by the lid. Cook on High for 1 hour and 20 minutes.
  8. Using oven gloves, tip out the bread. The base should now be golden brown. Turn it over, and cook upside down for a further 40 minutes. Until the top is also golden brown and the bread is cooked through.
  9. Turn out onto on a cooling rack for 30 minutes or so, before slicing and serving.
Recipe Notes

You can buy barley malt extract from larger supermarkets and whole food shops. Or online from Amazon.

💡 Serving Suggestions

Isn't this bread in the slow cooker easy to make? I think so too! If you're wondering what to serve with it - here are my favorites!

  • This healthier twist on spaghetti has some hidden vegetables that make it better for you and taste better too! - made in the air fryer it eliminates a lot of the fat from frying. The slow cooker bread goes great with this meal!
  • If you love Tex-Mex, then a Doritos Casserole is another great choice to serve with this olive bread recipe! With layers of chips, cheese, beans and salsa, it's a favorite even the kids gobble up!

Helpful Hints

If you’re looking to have this for dinner or as a dessert rather than breakfast, then you can prepare it the night before and place it in the fridge. The extra time will give the bread time to absorb the milk mixture. You may find you need to drop the cooking time a bit by a couple of hours.

Assuming you have the time, then I recommend cooking up some bacon to go with this casserole. They’re a match made in heaven. To go one step further, you can top it all off with some maple syrup, and you’re in for a treat.

Much like the bread pudding, this dish is a great way to use up any stale bread you might have. You will actually find that older and more stale bread will absorb the egg mixture a lot easier as well resulting in a better-tasting french toast.
